Muido

Muido is a small Island in the Northwest of Korea. Matt and I went with a couple of friends for the weekend before Chuseok and had an awesome time! We had so much fun that we went back for the holiday.

Waiting for the ferry on the mainland. That is Muido in the distance.

There is a 5 minute ferry to the island which may be the shortest ferry ride I've ever taken. During the ride there were seagulls surrounding the boat just begging for food. One of the workers passed out chips and we held them out while the bird swooped down behind you and took them directly from your hand. I flinched every time a heard a bird coming and it scared the birds before they grabbed the food in my hand.

Once on the island we set up camp and started making our bbq. The first time on the Island it was deserted. There was a serenity that you cant often find in Korea.

The tide goes so low that you can start walking from where the water started to disappear, walk for an hour and still not reach the water. They call this the "Moses Miracle" and it happens on almost all of the islands west of Korea. This provides for some interesting sea life that's left behind.

The second time we went to the Island we stayed in one of the huts on the beach. Since it was the holiday it was quite busy compared to the prior week, but still relaxing.

Directions: Go to Incheon airport. On the second floor get on bus 222 headed to the ferry. The ferry is around 6,000KRW roundtrip. Once on the Island there is only one bus. The bus will do a loop and at one point it will make a U-turn and head back the same direction it came from. Dont panic, it will back track a little ways and then turn onto a new road. Once at the last stop on this road get out and go to the information booth to check in.

Accommodation: There a cute Korean style huts on stilts located on the beach. 30,000KRW
Tent: 5,000KRW but you must bring your own tent.
Beach/Park pass: 2,000KRW
Restaurants: Lots of restaurants and a convenient store for snacks/drinks.

FYI- Many of these pictures are taken by my talented boyfriend who is an aspiring photographer.

  1. One comment about the ferry ride. I think the ferry to the Toronto island airport was shorter!
